Chaotic neutral is the alignment of pure personal freedom. A chaotic neutral person follows their own wants, whims and judgment, owing nothing to rules and nothing to causes. They are not out to hurt anyone, and not signed up to save anyone either. The only consistent loyalty is to staying free.
This is the internet's favorite alignment to joke about, because it explains the friend who is somehow both delightful and completely unpredictable. Chaotic neutral can be generous on Tuesday and gone by Friday. The behavior only looks random from outside. From inside there is exactly one rule: nobody owns me.
Where Chaotic Neutral sits on the alignment chart
The chart's two axes measure loyalty to rules and direction of care. Chaotic neutral sits at the middle right: maximum distance from structure, perfect balance between good and evil. It is freedom with the moral thermostat set to room temperature.
Above it, chaotic good spends that same freedom on other people. Below it, chaotic evil turns it into a weapon. Chaotic neutral keeps the freedom itself as the prize, which is why the alignment produces fiction's best tricksters and worst wedding guests.

Fiction's tricksters and loose cannons chart chaotic neutral:
Jack Sparrow: The alignment's mascot. Betrays, rescues, flees and returns, all in one plan that only makes sense to him, and only afterwards.
Catwoman: Steals from the rich, keeps it, occasionally saves Gotham anyway. Her compass points wherever she is currently walking.
Deadpool: Mercenary motives, random mercy, allergic to every team he joins. Chaotic neutral with a healing factor.
Q: Omnipotence used mostly for entertainment. He tests humanity because it amuses him, and helps it for the same reason.
Loki: The original wildcard. Whether he saves the day or ruins it depends on which is funnier this century. His worst days slide toward chaotic evil.
Chaotic Neutral vs. Chaotic Good
Both live outside the rulebook. Chaotic good aims its freedom outward: rules get broken so someone else ends up safer or freer. Is chaotic neutral just selfish?
Sometimes, but that is not the definition. The core is refusing to be owned: by rules, causes, jobs or expectations. Plenty of chaotic neutrals are generous, but on their own schedule and never on demand, which is what frustrates everyone who loves them.
Is chaotic neutral a fun alignment to be around?
The most fun, in doses. They make the best road trip companions and the least reliable emergency contacts. The friendship works once you stop billing them for predictability they never advertised.
Can chaotic neutral become good or evil?
It drifts more easily than any other alignment, because it has no anchor. A cause can pull it up to chaotic good, a grudge can pull it down. Loki has spent a century sliding back and forth across exactly this border.
