In the nine-alignment framework, chaotic neutral describes personal freedom and self-direction without a sustained commitment to helping or harming others. Alignment is a shorthand for a fictional character’s ethical outlook, not a complete personality or a psychological diagnosis.
Unpredictability is not the entire definition. A chaotic neutral character can form attachments and keep chosen promises; the label is not permission to disrupt other players’ game.

- Whose interests do their repeated choices protect, and whose costs do they disregard?
- What would you notice if a different interpretation of the same situation were true?
One situation, two alignment axes
Your character declines the lost-property office’s unnecessary interview, contacts the owner directly and then leaves for their own appointment.
The emphasis is freedom to choose a method. If the character keeps the money while disregarding the owner’s harm, the moral axis deserves a different discussion.
Which promise would this independent character choose to keep even when leaving would be easier?
Chaotic Neutral characters
These are possible readings of fictional characters, not official D&D classifications. Adaptations and character arcs can support different placements; identify the version and the choices you mean.
Jack Sparrow: Self-preservation and a preference for freedom make this reading useful. His rescues and betrayals also show why a single label is incomplete.
Catwoman: Independence is a recurring theme, but her concern for others differs by version. Specify the story before choosing the moral coordinate.
Deadpool: An unpredictable style is not enough to establish neutrality. Look at a particular story’s motives, loyalties and treatment of others.
Q: His challenges to ordinary rules suggest a chaotic reading. His shifting reasons for interfering make the moral axis open to debate.
Loki: The Marvel character’s changing loyalties offer several possible readings. Norse myth and Marvel adaptations should not be treated as one continuous biography.
