In the nine-alignment framework, lawful evil describes pursuing power or advantage at others’ expense through hierarchy, order or a personal code. Alignment is a shorthand for a fictional character’s ethical outlook, not a complete personality or a psychological diagnosis.
Lawful evil does not guarantee honesty, legality or keeping every contract. A character may exploit an institution or obey a private code while breaking the laws that bind other people.
