Lawful neutral is the alignment loyal to order itself: it applies the law, the code or the contract exactly as written, to everyone, whatever the outcome.
What does Lawful Neutral mean?
Lawful neutral is the alignment that serves order itself. A lawful neutral person follows the law, the code or the contract exactly as written, without bending it to help friends or punish enemies. Fairness, to them, means the same rules applied to everyone, every time, with no exceptions for sympathy.
This is the alignment of judges, referees and administrators at their best. The lawful part is total: procedure is followed even when it is inconvenient, unpopular or personally costly. The neutral part means the outcome is not the point. The process is. Whether a given result feels warm or cold is, in their view, not the law's business.
Where Lawful Neutral sits on the alignment chart
On the alignment chart's two axes, lawful neutral sits at the middle left: fully committed to structure on the rules axis, exactly balanced on the moral axis. It is the pure form of lawfulness, with the good and evil filtered out.
Above it, lawful good uses the same discipline in service of people. Below it, lawful evil uses the same discipline in service of itself. To its right sits true neutral, which drops even the loyalty to procedure. Lawful neutral is the spine of the grid: every other alignment defines itself partly by how far it bends from this one.

Fiction's referees, lawmen and sticklers chart as lawful neutral:
Spock: Logic as law. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, calculated without a thumb on the scale.
Inspector Javert: The alignment's tragedy. A man so loyal to the law that mercy, when it finally reaches him, breaks him instead of bending him.
Judge Dredd: He is the law, famously and literally. The satire is what lawful neutral looks like with the volume turned all the way up.
Captain Holt: Procedure, precision and zero exceptions, played warm. Proof the alignment can be beloved.

Lawful Neutral vs. Lawful Good
Both keep the rules. Lawful good keeps them because rules protect people, and will campaign to fix a law that stops protecting them. Lawful neutral keeps them because they are the rules. Is lawful neutral a bad alignment?
No. It is the alignment most institutions need in order to stay fair: referees, auditors, judges. It turns dark only when procedure outlives its purpose and nobody inside the system is willing to say so.
What is the difference between lawful neutral and lawful evil?
Who the order serves. Lawful neutral serves the system itself and applies it evenly, including to its own advantage and disadvantage alike. Lawful evil builds and uses the system as a weapon for its own gain, with the rules as armor.
Why would anyone choose lawful neutral?
Because someone has to hold the standard when everyone else has a favorite. In a dispute, the person both sides trust is rarely the kindest one. It is the one who cannot be moved.
